The IVF and ICSI process

In IVF, mature eggs are retrieved from the ovaries and fertilized with sperm in the lab; the resulting embryo is transferred to the uterus. In ICSI, a single sperm is injected directly into the egg — used when fertilization is unlikely to happen on its own, most often due to male-factor infertility.
